Memengwaa is a Housing Supports, Prevention/Shelter Diversion, and Support Services project operated by Shawenim. The project targets Indigenous youth up to 25 years old transitioning from the Child and Family Services (CFS) system. Memengwaa offers essential services including case management, referrals, advocacy, and group programming to facilitate stable housing and provide necessary support.
The program operates two housing streams: the Transitional housing stream accommodates 5 female or female-identifying youth on Manitoba Avenue and 24 youth on Alfred Avenue, while the Community stream supports up to 20 youth. These options ensure a range of housing solutions tailored to the participants' needs, providing flexible and supportive living environments.
Memengwaa places a strong emphasis on cultural reconnection, offering access to ceremonies, teachings, and life skills deeply rooted in Indigenous traditions. These culturally based supports aim to empower participants, fostering a strong sense of identity and community belonging among Indigenous youth, and helping them build a stable and meaningful future.
