Aging Adults and Homelessness Prevention

Aging adults are one of the fastest-growing groups facing homelessness in Winnipeg. Rising rents, fixed incomes, and health challenges push many, often for the first time, into crisis. The 2024 Winnipeg Street Census shows a clear rise in homelessness beginning at age 55.

For many, homelessness is triggered by eviction, Elder abuse, or loss of a partner. Indigenous aging adults face added risks due to systemic inequities and cultural displacement. Yet, most shelters remain ill-equipped to meet their physical and medical needs.

End Homelessness Winnipeg funds A & O Support Services for Older Adults' This Full House program. The initiative helps older adults aged 55 and over who are experiencing hoarding disorder and are at risk of eviction or housing loss through counselling, specialized clean-up supports, housing advocacy, emergency assistance, and peer support services that promote housing stability and prevent homelessness.

End Homelessness Winnipeg is advancing prevention through advocacy for age-friendly housing, culturally relevant supports for Indigenous Elders, and coordinated care so aging adults can age in dignity, not in homelessness.
